Wood walks & steps

Wood steps are available in a number of styles. The least expensive alternative is individual wood beams anchored to the ground with steel rebar. The walkway surface between the beams is typically wood or stone chips over a weed barrier. This option is typically used in low traffic areas.

Wood beam frame steps are anchored to the ground with steel rebar and to the adjacent beams with spike nails and rebar. The walking surface inside the wood beam frame is usually filled with wood chips, stone chips or pea gravel. Frame steps are usually more expensive than individual beams. These steps are typically found in semi-formal settings (e.g. front walks on log homes, garden paths, stairways to the lake).

Instead of wood or stone chips as a walking surface, decking boards can be installed over a wood beam frame. This option is often used for front walkways or secondary walks where safety is important.
